In 1492, Christopher Columbus landed on the island of Guanahani, soon realizing that he hadn’t found what he was looking for—a new route to the Indies—but something much more significant: the Discovery of America by Europe, a moment that would change the course of the world.
25 years later, the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, after receiving a refusal from Manuel I of Portugal to finance the mission, approached a young Charles I who agreed to sponsor the expedition. This was aimed at granting Spain the chance to reach the Moluccas Islands via the western route without crossing the seas reserved for the Portuguese, directly resulting from the signing of the Treaty of Tordesillas.
