In 1909, the most symbolic uprising in the contemporary history of Barcelona occurred. The Kingdom of Spain had just lost its last colonies in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines 11 years earlier; it could not afford to lose the northern region of Morocco. Thus, the Government of Maura ordered the massive embarkation of reservists from all over the country heading to Melilla, while from the docks of Barcelona, women and children shouted ‘Down with the war! Let the rich go! All or none!’. With the growing tension in the city, filled with demonstrations and protests against the troop embarkation, the uprising erupted on Monday, July 26, 1909…
