On November 3, 1893, the ship Cabo Machichaco arrived at the port of Santander.
It was a coastal vessel carrying passengers and 1616 tons of general cargo, including 43,000 kilograms of dynamite. Early in the morning, a bottle of sulfuric acid on deck broke, causing a fire on the ship.
